UCA BA (Hons) Animation final year student Lauren Hammersley created ‘TWITCH’, a short experimental film that explores the physical sensations of anxiety and aims to mimic these feelings through animation with portraits. Lauren said "Anxiety is something I’ve been tackling the past few years and I’ve no doubt with Covid others are feeling it too. Anxiety and other mental health issues have been a popular subject amongst animators as animation give a way for more abstract ideas than other art forms such as live-action, however, I didn’t want this film to be like all other films about anxiety. During my A levels, I did photography, mainly black and white portraits on film and would distort them in the darkroom and wanted to bring a similar technique into this film, and ‘TWITCH’ was born. I wanted to make the viewers feel uncomfortable and overwhelmed when watching it and engulfed in visuals and sound." She continued "The making of the film involved interviewing friends and family about their experiences with anxiety and what physical sensations they feel. I then took their pictures, developed the films and used these images to mirror the things said in the interviews. A friend of mine did the music and actually used clips from the interviews as the instruments."
