UCA Rochester BA Photography students Muriel Lagoutte @xoxomuriel_ and Shaïny Vilo @dodgylight are exhibiting work at the Black History Month Photo-Open, a long with a great calibre of other photographers. Muriel says "I see beauty everywhere and within. Through my photography, I aim to capture moments that are often overlooked. I find myself drawn naturally to portraits, where I can showcase diversity since I believe it is still lacking in the industry. To me Black Lives Matter everyday and not just one month, that is why I celebrate them all year long." Shaïny says "My project titled AFRO+PUNK is an autobiographical editorial photography and videography project depicting a journey through the exploration of black identities in the alternative community and the struggles and complexities faced whilst in the middle. Inspired by Grace Wales Bonner, Adam Pendleton and Basquiat, this project provocatively addresses identity, race and sexuality through symbolism and a small essay piece in hope for other black alternative people to look back at and relate to."
