UCA BA (Hons) Architecture student Jordan Panayi created this project called 'Developing material consciousness'. Jordan said "This project was focused on an outpost for one user. The user was a stonemason that is part of the restoration project currently being worked on Canterbury Cathedral. The outpost sits on a wall on the boundary of the cathedral, where the mason carves stone to replace decaying or damaged pieces of the cathedral. The outpost was designed to develop a 1:1 relationship between the mason and the stone, learning its characteristics and becoming conscious of its habits." For the models, Jordan carried out the same process the mason would, looking at an individual stone piece from the Cathedrals' cloister, carrying out a measured drawing known by masons as 'stereotomy' and then carving the final stone piece at a 1:2 scale.
