One of the most interesting, exciting and thought-provoking activities to do in summer is to visit an end-of-year show of art and design students. • It is not only fun talent-spotting creative stars of the future, but also wonderfully inspirational and an opportunity to make a note of artists to buy from if you form a passion for their work. • The University for the Creative Arts at Farnham in Surrey is this week holding its Graduation Show 2017, giving students the chance to show off their creative successes to the public. • UCA was earlier this year ‘recognised as the Number One specialist university for the Creative Industries by both the Complete and Guardian University Guides’, and is praised for its facilities. • The range of subjects includes Illustration, Computer Games Arts, Fine Art, Photography, Digital Film and Screen Arts, a degree comprising Glass, Ceramics, Jewellery and Metalwork, Animation, Textiles for Fashion and Interiors, Graphic Communication, Film Production, Advertising, Media and Communications, Journalism and Sports Journalism. • The university was formed in 2005 after several independent public art and design colleges in the counties of Kent and Surrey were merged, almost all of which originated in the Victorian era – Farnham School of Art was founded in 1866. Today UCA has campuses at Canterbury and Rochester in Kent, and also Epsom in Surrey. Farnham is a picturesque town some 35 miles from London, close to the Hampshire border, of historic interest and overlooked by the 12th century Farnham Castle. The total student population is around 6000, with 4,500 undergraduates. • A particular degree show favourite of mine is the Illustration section. Those I particularly liked this year included (please swipe): Tuesday Logan (@tuesdaylogan), an embroidery; Nayuma Rai (@tama.rai), cutaway building and people; Pauline Baluyut (@paulinekate.illustrates), bear and boy; Maxene Brown (@maxene_brown), legs. The Illustration department always produces a wonderful booklet, too, with examples of all the artists’ work. The show runs until 17 June. #ucafarnham #workofart #illustration #art #farnhamcastle #studenttalent #creative
